Minister Tasks Farmers on Increased Support for Agricultural Sector

by AgroNigeria

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has called on Nigerians, particularly farmers, to support the government’s efforts in building a more sustainable, resilient, and prosperous agricultural sector across West Africa.

Speaking at the Green Agriculture West Africa Expo 2025 held in Ikeja, Lagos, Kyari emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing sustainable farming practices under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The minister, represented by Mrs. Omolara Abimbola–Oguntuyi, stated that the government’s initiative aims to protect biodiversity, conserve natural resources, and ensure the long-term sustainability of agricultural ecosystems.

He highlighted the importance of creating valuable networking opportunities for businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs in the agricultural industry, fostering collaboration that could drive the sector forward.

“As we face the growing challenges of climate change, population growth, and evolving market demands, it is crucial that we transform the agricultural landscape through innovative technologies and sustainable farming methods,” Kyari said.

In his remarks, Prof. Lateef Sanni, the Executive Director of the Nigeria Stock Product Research Institute (NSPRI), also emphasized the need for practical, cost-effective, and accessible technological solutions throughout the agricultural value chain.

He stressed that the integration of simple yet impactful technologies could help reduce pest attacks on crops, a critical concern for farmers.

Additionally, Prof. Sanni called for the formulation of policies that would facilitate the timely release of credit facilities with single-digit interest rates, ensuring that farmers have access to financial resources to improve productivity.

He further underscored the role of Green Agriculture, which is deeply rooted in technology-driven practices, integrated pest management systems, and conservation agriculture.

Abiodun Olaniyi, the Executive Director of Agriquest Africa Network Limited and Convener of the Green Agriculture West Africa Expo 2025, explained that the expo was established to address the evolving agricultural needs in the region.

“Agriculture in West Africa is undergoing significant transformation, and it is essential to take it to the next level. We must focus on the sustainability of agriculture, especially as we face the growing threat of climate change,” he remarked.

Olaniyi further noted that the expo also aimed to raise awareness about regenerative agriculture practices, including soil health management and sustainable planting techniques.

The three-day event provided a platform for knowledge sharing and the exploration of advanced agricultural technologies that could shape the future of farming in West Africa.

Other experts who participated in the event shared valuable insights on various aspects of agriculture, while exhibitors showcased innovative products and solutions designed to enhance agricultural practices.
