Ministry Partners Edo First Lady Office to Develop Agriculture Sector

by AgroNigeria

The Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is set to transform the agricultural landscape of the state through a strategic partnership with the Office of the Wife of the Governor.

This was revealed during a visit by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Peter Osagie, and his team to the Coordinator of the Office of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Edesili Anani.

She emphasized the importance of the partnership in implementing the Renewed Hope Initiatives (RHI) spearheaded by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Anani outlined four key agricultural support programs under the Renewed Hope Initiatives aimed at boosting food production and improving livelihoods.

The first program focuses on equipping women with the necessary skills and resources to thrive in agriculture, while also empowering young farmers, both male and female, to encourage their participation in the sector.

She highlighted the “Every-Home-a-Garden” program, which promotes household gardening to enhance food security, reduce market dependency, and improve nutrition. Families participating in the program will receive cash incentives to encourage wider adoption.

Anani also revealed plans to revive the Young Farmers Club in schools across the state. This initiative seeks to reshape students’ views on agriculture by presenting it as a viable business opportunity and a critical driver of national food security. By engaging young people early, the program aims to nurture a new generation of agripreneurs and foster sustainable growth in the sector.

In his response, Dr. Osagie praised the First Lady’s office for its vision and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the programs.

He noted that the Renewed Hope Initiatives align with the Ministry’s core objectives and the agricultural priorities of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, particularly as outlined in the 2025 budget.

He highlighted several ongoing projects within the Ministry that could complement the Renewed Hope Initiatives, such as the IFAD-Life-ND Programme, which employs an apprenticeship model to promote agricultural skill acquisition.

He also mentioned the Commercial Agriculture Credit Loan Scheme, which provides farmers with access to affordable credit at single-digit interest rates, and the Fadama NG-CARES Program, which supports agricultural clusters with an emphasis on value addition.

Both parties expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to accelerate agricultural development, empower communities, and boost food security in Edo State.

Dr. Osagie assured that the Ministry would deploy its resources and expertise to ensure the seamless execution of the programs, while Anani reiterated the First Lady’s commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives that drive positive change.
