In an effort to harness its vast agricultural potential, the Niger state government has set a target of becoming Nigeria’s number one food basket, as well as to supply food to the entire West African region.
With over 76,000 square kilometers of mostly arable land, Niger State has the potential to feed not only Nigeria’s large population of over 200 million but also the entire West African region.
“I want Niger State to become the food basket of Nigeria and provide food for the entire West African region,” Governor Bago announced to his council members.
To achieve this goal, the governor has directed all residents to address him as the “Farmer Governor” and has encouraged all his commissioners, aides, and civil servants to get involved in farming alongside their official duties.
The state’s efforts have already yielded impressive results, generating N600 billion from agriculture and related businesses in 2023.
Governor Bago has also announced a $2 million poultry plant for construction in Bosso Local Government Area and has flagged off the Niger Foods corn harvest, expecting about a million metric tonnes of corn this year.
The Niger State government has also partnered with the Developing-8 group to attract investors in priority sectors such as agriculture, food security, and energy.
The state has also instituted a health insurance program for farmers and their families.
As Niger State sets its sights on becoming Nigeria’s food basket, Governor Bago’s initiatives are being closely watched by stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
