Nigeria, Brazil Partner To Enhance Productivity Through Research in Animal Genetics

by AgroNigeria

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed that new agreements would focus on enhancing productivity through research in animal genetics, as Nigeria and Brazil prepare to sign over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).

He said the dialogue, scheduled to begin on June 23 in Abuja, offers a timely platform to push forward agricultural priorities, particularly the Green Imperative Programme, which seeks to establish agricultural delivery offices across all 774 local government areas in the country.

The three-day session will also cover other areas of cooperation, with the signing of MoUs expected across key sectors such as energy, defence, innovation, and the creative economy, in addition to agriculture.

Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, described the session as aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places emphasis on economic recovery, strong international partnerships, and repositioning Nigeria globally. He also confirmed the scheduled visit of Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, whom he said would participate in discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, food systems, energy and cultural exchange.

The session will also feature a Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, designed to connect leaders from both public institutions and private enterprises. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, noted that the forum would serve as a platform for collaboration within a combined market of over 400 million people. She added that Brazil’s strong record in digital inclusion would complement Nigeria’s rapidly growing fintech landscape, with a Digital Trade Room to be introduced as part of the forum’s proceedings.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through Ambassador Janet Olis who represented Minister Yusuf Tuggar, reiterated Nigeria’s interest in using the SDM framework to promote economic diplomacy with a clear focus on agriculture, innovation, and private-sector growth.

She said the engagement was not only about building ties but also about aligning shared development goals between the two countries.
