Nigeria Shares Remarkable Success Story of TELA Maize  

Nigeria, the last of the six African countries to join the TELA Maize Project in 2019, has proudly shared its remarkable success story. Emerging as the second African country, after South Africa, to release and commercialise not just one, but four TELA maize varieties.

The TELA Maize varieties, according to a statement, were SAMMAZ 72T, SAMMAZ 73T, SAMMAZ 74T, and SAMMAZ 75T.

There were accolades and encomiums which filled the air at the 6th Annual Review and Planning Meeting of the TELA Maize Project held in Mombasa, Kenya when Nigeria celebrated its success story on TELA MAIZE production.

“Representing Nigeria, Professor Rabiu S. Adamu, the TELA Maize Project Coordinator in Nigeria, captivated the audience with the nation’s journey from joining the project to becoming a leader in TELA maize commercialization.”

“Professor Rabiu Adamu was accompanied by a delegation of Agricultural experts from Nigeria which included the Executive Director of the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR/ABU), Prof. Ado Yusuf, the Director General of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha.”

“Others were Executive Secretary of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) represented by Dr. Umar Abdullahi, along with other members of the TELA research team from Nigeria.”

“It was an incredible achievement.with positive impact on Agricultural Development in Nigeria and across Africa.”

“TELA Maize Nigerian Agricultural Innovation and Food Security, ARCN, IAR and NABDA have witnessed a Proud Moment and Sustainable Farming in Kenya,” the statement added.
