Nigeria has secured a landmark victory in agricultural diplomacy, earning the right to host the 14th Triennial African Potato Association (APA) Conference in 2028, a win that positions the nation at the forefront of root and tuber crop research and innovation on the continent.
The successful bid, championed by Mr. Ishaku Jilensam on behalf of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), received unanimous endorsement from the APA Council during its May 2025 meeting in Munyonyo, Uganda.
Founded in 1983, the APA is Africa’s leading platform for advancing potato and sweetpotato production, utilization, and innovation. Its triennial conference serves as a high-profile gathering where global experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders converge to share breakthroughs, tackle sector challenges, and chart the future of root and tuber development across Africa.
The 2028 edition offers Nigeria a unique opportunity to showcase its advancements in agricultural research, value addition, and market development—particularly in the potato and sweetpotato value chains. NRCRI, headquartered in Umuahia, Abia State, will co-coordinate the event alongside the International Potato Center (CIP), ensuring a world-class experience that fosters collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders.
The announcement also came with the unveiling of APA’s new leadership for the 2025–2028 term. Prof. Chiedozie Egesi, Executive Director of NRCRI and a driving force in Nigeria’s agricultural research landscape, was elected President, while Hon. Bugama Samson Ishaku, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in Plateau State, was named Vice-President.
APA further tasked NRCRI with appointing a Communications Officer to work closely with the Council in raising awareness and sustaining visibility for the conference, a move aimed at ensuring seamless preparations and maximum impact.
In a congratulatory statement, Dr. Joyce Maru, Regional Director for Africa at the International Potato Center, commended NRCRI and Nigeria for securing the bid, expressing optimism about a successful and impactful APA 2028 Conference.
As the countdown begins, APA 2028 is set to become a defining moment for Nigeria and Africa’s agricultural sector, driving innovation, attracting investment, and strengthening the scientific and commercial foundations of potato and sweetpotato production across the continent.
