Nigerians Urged to Embrace Organic Farming in Home Gardens

The Conservation General of the Nigeria National Park Service, Mr. Ibrahim Guni, has urged Nigerians to engage in organic agriculture, utilising their gardens and company spaces.

According to Guni, this approach will enhance food security and promote healthy living.

Guni made this call during the opening ceremony of a two-day training on the Principles of Organic Agriculture, organised by the Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture in Africa, held in Abuja.

He emphasised the importance of Nigeria producing its own food, noting that this training aligns with the current administration’s focus on food security.

“We approved the hosting of this training here because we support Mr. President’s agenda on food security. Food should be on the table of every Nigerian. I urge all Nigerians to produce what they eat. With the diverse group present today, including full-time farmers and journalists who farm, it’s clear that the government’s efforts are making an impact. We must take this responsibility ourselves,” Guni stated.

He encouraged the participants to train others, ensuring that the message reaches the grassroots level.

“Congratulations to the organisers for the success of this program. For the trainees, I urge you to pass on your knowledge to others, making sure that there is value for time and money spent here.”

Guni also advised against immediately thinking of large-scale commercial farming. “Start with your garden behind your house and plant vegetables,” he said.

However, Mrs. Ebere Agozie, a representative of the Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture in Nigeria, highlighted the harmful effects of synthetic substances used in conventional farming.

She stressed the necessity of this training and urged Nigerians to adopt organic foods to avoid the dangers of pesticides.

Dr. Rasheedah Sadiq, speaking on probiotic farming, encouraged Nigerians to detoxify their bodies, noting that organic food can help with anti-aging properties.
