The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) to promote climate-resilient agriculture and strengthen Nigeria’s food systems against the impacts of climate change.
Both organisations on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at NiMet headquarters in Abuja, outlining joint efforts to develop climate-smart weather tools, build farmers’ capacity, and advance technologies that enhance agricultural value chains.
Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the collaboration would provide farmers with timely, accurate climate information critical for sustainable agricultural practices.
“For agriculture to be truly climate-resilient, access to reliable weather and climate information is essential. This MoU enables us to combine our expertise with AATF to deliver impactful solutions to farmers,” he stated.
Regional Director of AATF, Dr. Jean Tignegre, described the partnership as a vital step towards equipping Nigerian farmers to meet climate challenges.
He emphasised AATF’s mission to remove barriers preventing smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa from accessing transformative technologies and expressed optimism that the collaboration would scale innovations to improve food security and livelihoods.
The agreement covers key areas such as the development of climate-smart weather support tools for women- and youth-led agricultural enterprises, capacity building on climate-smart agricultural practices, technical support in agreed project locations, and joint development of funding proposals for climate-smart technologies.
It also establishes frameworks for transparent project implementation and joint planning, with both organisations retaining their mandates to enhance farmers’ resilience, strengthen agricultural value chains, and contribute to national food security.
However, the MoU will run until January 31, 2028, with provisions for renewal.
