The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration to prioritize agriculture, and other key sectors for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
Speaking at the institute’s third Monthly Public Lecture held in Benin City, the state chairman of NIPR, James-Wisdom Abhulimen, emphasized the importance of infrastructural development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic diversification as pillars of growth.
The event, themed Governance and Prosperity in Edo State: Options and Challenges, highlighted recommendations for achieving sustainable development in Edo State.
Abhulimen stressed the need to focus on infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic diversification to improve the lives of Edo citizens.
He noted that these sectors are crucial for increasing the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and achieving inclusive growth.
The NIPR chairman congratulated Governor Okpebholo on his electoral victory and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the state towards a brighter future.
He reiterated the institute’s readiness to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to achieve sustainable development, urging all parties involved in the Edo project to unite in building a state where governance translates into tangible prosperity for citizens.
Abhulimen highlighted road infrastructure and youth empowerment as crucial to driving economic growth and ensuring long-term progress.
In his keynote address, Professor Felix Oriakhi of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, reinforced the call for transparent and ethical leadership.
Oriakhi argued that effective governance must prioritize the public good, combat corruption, and address the economic challenges facing the state.
On education, Oriakhi called for urgent investment in school infrastructure, the recruitment of qualified educators, and a greater focus on technical education to prepare students for a competitive future.
In healthcare, he urged the establishment of accessible, high-quality medical facilities across the state to improve public health outcomes.
Professor Oriakhi also recommended investments in agriculture, including financial support for farmers and the establishment of silos to ensure food security.
He further called for innovative measures to diversify the state’s economy, enhance revenue generation, and adopt e-governance to minimize inefficiencies and address revenue leakages.
