The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has announced plans to improve Nigeria’s agriculture sector with new post-harvest solutions.
Ahead of its 2024 annual conference, the NSE aims to cut down on food loss and boost food security by using solar-powered storage and mobile cold-chain technology.
Margaret Oguntala, NSE President and Chairwoman-in-Council, made this announcement at a news conference in Abuja ahead of the society’s annual conference set to take place later this month.
She noted that part of the conference’s focus will be the advancement of agricultural machinery.
“We will explore advancements in agricultural machinery, such as automated tractors and precision seeders, to boost productivity. We will also discuss efficient irrigation systems powered by sensor-based technologies, along with renewable energy solutions like mini-grid solar installations that foster energy independence for rural farming,” she said.
Ms. Oguntala explained that there will also be sessions on precision agriculture, highlighting tools like remote sensing and soil health mapping that help farmers maximize crop yields while conserving resources.
According to her, the NSE is looking into climate-resilient crops and early weather alert systems to protect food systems, especially now, as the nation faces unpredictable climatic conditions.
“This event is not just a conference but it’s a platform for partnerships that will shape Nigeria’s future in climate resilience, food security, and engineering advancements,” she added.
She announced that the opening ceremony will be held on November 19, with President Bola Tinubu as the distinguished guest of honor. Other notable attendees include Agriculture Minister Abubakar Kyari, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who will serve as chief host.
