Ogun Govt Reinforces Ban on Open Grazing As Violators Risk 3-Year Jail Term

by AgroNigeria

The Ogun State Government has reasserted its ban on open grazing, warning that violators risk arrest, prosecution, and penalties including up to three years in prison and permanent forfeiture of their cattle.

This firm stance follows a spike in complaints about traffic disruptions, farmland destruction, and rising tensions between farmers and herders across the state.

The government said the law is crucial to preserving peace, protecting agricultural investments, and maintaining public order.

In a statement issued Monday, the government stressed that the Anti-Open Grazing Law of Ogun State remains “in full effect and will be enforced without hesitation.”

Authorities advised herders to adopt ranching and other modern livestock practices to comply with the law.

“Any herder caught flouting the law will be arrested, prosecuted, and upon conviction, face up to three years imprisonment. In addition, the government will seize and auction any cattle found grazing openly on public roads or private farmlands,” the statement read.

The government called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to help enforce the law and protect farmers from economic losses.

Officials reassured the public of their commitment to peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers, promising that enforcement would balance safety and fairness for all agricultural stakeholders.
