Oyo Deepens FAO Partnership to Boost Food Security,  Rural Prosperity

by AgroNigeria

Oyo State Government has pledged deeper collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to enhance food security, farm productivity, and rural livelihoods.

Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde, delivered the assurance on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde during a Monday meeting at the State Secretariat in Ibadan with new FAO Country Representative Hussein Gadain.

Babatunde highlighted the administration’s focus on global partnerships to innovate agriculture, empower farmers, and foster sustainable rural growth. He positioned agriculture as Oyo’s economic cornerstone, with FAO ties expanding access to modern techniques and inputs.

The state showcased ongoing efforts: 50% tractorisation subsidies for mechanised farming, subsidised seedlings and fertilisers, rural farm road rehabilitation, and boosted irrigation plus extension services for grassroots farmers.

Agriculture Commissioner Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye detailed advances in livestock, fisheries, youth agribusiness, and agro-processing to cut post-harvest losses and raise incomes.

Gadain praised Oyo’s proactive policies and committed FAO to intensified cooperation on climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness, and food systems. FAO’s Nigeria programs include smallholder training, climate-resilient seeds, pest control, early warnings, and digital tools to build resilience and national food security.
