The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to prioritise agriculture by investing in food crops to drive down the current high cost of food.
Equally, President Tinubu tasked Nigerians in general to play their part by engaging in some form of subsistence farming.
Speaking at the Global Integrity International Award on Good Governance and Economy in Lagos, where he was also honored, Tinubu emphasized the importance of investing in food crops.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Tunde Rahman, the president highlighted the need for subsistence farming and better agricultural practices across the country.
Tinubu pointed to discrepancies in food pricing within Nigeria, suggesting that inefficiencies contribute significantly to high costs.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to agricultural investment, citing initiatives such as dry season farming and support for wheat farmers, which have created jobs and injected substantial funds into the economy.
He also mentioned efforts to improve infrastructure, energy, and foreign investments, projecting gradual economic recovery under his Renewed Hope Agenda.
In alignment with this federal push, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun allocated farmlands to state legislators to boost food security.
This initiative, part of the federal government’s agricultural resurgence plan, aims to position Ogun State as a key food producer. Governor Abiodun praised the legislators’ commitment to governance and promised ongoing collaboration to drive the state’s development.
Furthermore, the president’s remarks and Ogun State’s actions reflect a strategic focus on agricultural revitalization as a means to stabilize the economy and enhance food security in Nigeria.
