It’s a big win for Nigeria as Prof. Chiedozie Egesi, Executive Director of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, has been appointed as the new President of the African Potato Association (APA).
The appointment was made at the ongoing APA conference in Kampala, Uganda.
Egesi’s emergence is seen as a major recognition of Nigeria’s contributions and growing influence in agricultural research across the continent.
To add to the good news, Nigeria’s bid to host the next African Potato Association conference in 2028 was also unanimously approved by members.
This development is a huge boost to Nigeria’s root and tuber sector, and many stakeholders have taken to social media to celebrate the dual victory.
The team from the National Roots Crops Research Institute, NRCRI, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, Umudike Seeds, IITA, Sahel Consulting, and the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association (NPBA) have all been praised for their strong representation.
Prof. Egesi, as a plant breeder and researcher, seeks to promote improved potato production and innovation across Africa.
