Regenerative Agriculture: The Holistic Farming System For Healthier Planet

by AgroNigeria

Regenerative agriculture is a farming approach focused on improving soil health. It involves restoring damaged soils through eco-friendly practices like adaptive grazing, no-till planting, and reducing or avoiding pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

The goal is to work with nature to rebuild the land’s natural balance. Regenerative agriculture takes a comprehensive approach to farming, aiming to revive ecosystems while ensuring food production. Unlike traditional methods that can degrade soil, water, and biodiversity, regenerative practices prioritize rebuilding the natural resources essential to farming. By aligning with nature’s processes, this method seeks to create a sustainable and resilient agricultural system that benefits both the environment and the farmer.

Benefits of Regenerative Agriculture

1. Regenerative agriculture improves air and water quality

Regenerative agriculture promotes cleaner air and water by improving soil health, which has far-reaching benefits beyond the soil itself. When soil is covered with plants and organic matter, it naturally filters water more effectively. The healthier the soil, the better it performs this role. By keeping the land covered and reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, ranchers can significantly improve water quality through regenerative practices.

2. Regenerative agriculture promotes reducing chemical use and pollution

By enhancing soil’s natural fertility, farmers can cut down on the need for extra fertilizer. Increasing plant and animal diversity helps build resilience against pests and encourages a new perspective. In regenerative ranching, “weeds” aren’t always seen as harmful since livestock can graze on them. When cattle, sheep, or goats eat weeds, the need for herbicides decreases.

3. Integration of Livestock

Livestock plays a crucial role in regenerative agriculture. Managed grazing systems, such as rotational grazing, allow animals to mimic the natural movement of herds in the wild, promoting soil fertility and plant growth. This not only enhances soil health but also increases carbon sequestration and improves biodiversity on the farm.

The loss of fertile soil, biodiversity, and indigenous seeds and knowledge poses a serious threat to our future survival. Soil scientists warn that if current rates of soil destruction—through decarbonization, erosion, desertification, and chemical pollution—continue, within 50 years we will face not only public health issues due to a degraded, nutrient-poor food supply, but also a critical shortage of arable topsoil to grow enough food. Protecting and regenerating the soil on our farmlands, pastures, and forests is essential to feeding the world, limiting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, and preserving biodiversity.
