The Senate has summoned the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, to present the ministry’s blueprint and outline its implementation strategies.
The directive was announced by Senator Musa Mustapha (Yobe East), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock, during the committee’s inaugural meeting at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday.
Senator Mustapha affirmed the committee’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate in the nation’s interest, emphasizing the critical role of livestock development in addressing key national issues.
This development follows the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, based on recommendations from the National Livestock Reforms Committee chaired by Professor Attahiru Jega.
During the session, the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), highlighted the opportunities the new ministry presents. “The creation of the Ministry of Livestock opens new avenues for Nigerians. We want to understand its priorities and ensure its impact is felt nationwide, not just in the North,” he said.
Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South) added that resolving farmer-herder conflicts is a key focus for the committee, noting that these clashes were a primary factor in the ministry’s establishment. “Our mandate includes addressing farmer-herder clashes to bring an end to this crisis across the country,” he stressed.
The committee pledged to work closely with the ministry to deliver tangible results and foster national unity through effective livestock development initiatives.
