Stakeholders Task Women Farmers on Modern Farming Techniques

by AgroNigeria

Female farmers have been encouraged to adopt modern farming techniques to boost productivity, as part of the commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women.

Speaking on the theme, “Good Food for All, for Today and Tomorrow,” stakeholders highlighted the hesitation among rural women to pursue training on new technologies unless immediate benefits are evident.

During a webinar organised by HortiNigeria in partnership with SWIS Africa for Women’s Empowerment and Agribusiness, participants discussed barriers hindering rural women farmers in Nigeria.

The event aimed to promote investment opportunities, financial inclusion, and modern farming practices for women in agriculture, emphasizing long-term impacts on their livelihoods.

Aisha Ahmed, leader of the Hanwa Taimako Women and Multipurpose Society, urged women to focus on cultivating profitable crops like vegetables, which provide food security and higher profits.

However, she noted that limited land access, high rental costs, and insecurity are major obstacles preventing women from fully capitalizing on agricultural opportunities.

CEO of Umera Farm, Olamide Alao-Akala, pointed to the lack of education and resources as significant challenges for women starting agribusinesses.

She explained how her organization equips women with the tools and training needed to enhance profit margins.

Dr. Zainab Gwadabe, CEO of Seed Projects Co. Ltd., emphasized the importance of quality seeds in addressing food security concerns.

Speaking from the World Food Forum in Rome, she stated, “High-quality seeds are crucial for improving agricultural yields and nutrition.”

Financial inclusion was also a key focus, with Olajumoke Daramola from Women’s World Banking advocating for women-specific financial products to drive empowerment and sustainable development.

The panelists also addressed other challenges faced by rural women, such as limited access to funds, technological barriers, and insecurity.

Tolulope Aina, a mentor and entrepreneur, emphasized the role of action-oriented mentorship in agribusiness, providing a supportive environment for learning and growth.
