The Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Arenyeka, has said the only way to ensure food security is for every Nigerian, including journalists, to get involved in farming.
Arenyeka made the statement on Wednesday during a visit by the executive members of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to his office in Asaba.
He emphasized the importance of farming as a key solution to the current food shortage in the country, urging everyone, including journalists, to contribute by starting small-scale farming.
“The only way to ensure food security is for every Nigerian, including journalists, to get involved in farming,” he said.
Arenyeka highlighted that the state government’s empowerment programmes, facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture, would support journalists who venture into farming.
He explained that agriculture has evolved from manual methods to technology-driven practices and stressed the need for Nigerians to become self-reliant in food production.
“I encourage each of you to establish small farms, even in your backyards. This is the only way you can get empowered through our programmes,” Arenyeka stated, adding that Delta citizens involved in farming are eligible for state support.
In a move to strengthen agricultural activities, Arenyeka also announced the recruitment of an additional 70 Delta State Livestock Management Officers (DSLMO) to monitor farming operations across the 25 local government areas of the state.
He noted that the recruitment will enhance oversight of livestock management and farming, contributing to overall food security.
Addressing concerns about the herders and farmers crisis, Arenyeka remarked, “While we are addressing agricultural concerns at the state level, the herders and farmers conflict is a national issue that falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. However, we remain committed to supporting safe and productive farming.”
Earlier in the meeting, the Chairman of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel, Ifeanyi Olannye, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and pledged continued partnership with the ministry.
He called on the commissioner to fully utilize available resources to achieve food security and job creation, aligning with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda.
Olannye also appealed for journalists to be included in the ministry’s empowerment programmes, emphasizing that hunger affects all, regardless of profession, tribe, or political affiliation.
