The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has announced a partnership with the National Sugar Development Council to strengthen Nigeria’s sugar industry by enhancing water access for sugarcane farms and processing facilities.
The announcement was made in Abuja by Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, during a courtesy visit from the council’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Kamar Bakrin.
Professor Utsev emphasized that this collaboration will focus on sustainable water provision to support consistent sugar production across the country.
He highlighted upcoming plans to desilt major rivers, dams, and reservoirs, which would not only improve water supply to sugarcane farms but also reduce flooding risks and promote the blue economy.
“This partnership has the potential to create jobs for our youth and strengthen Nigeria’s economy through the development of the sugar sector,” Professor Utsev remarked.
He praised the National Sugar Development Council’s role in driving economic growth and expressed gratitude for their commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda of national prosperity.
Furthermore, the Executive Secretary Mr. Bakrin stated that the visit aimed to secure the ministry’s support in ensuring a stable water supply for sugarcane farms and factories, which is essential for increasing production and reducing Nigeria’s sugar supply gap. The council looks forward to a robust partnership with the ministry to achieve these shared goals.
