WOFAN, MasterCard Foundation Distribute Hearing Aids to Farmers With Disabilities

by AgroNigeria

The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN), in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation, has launched an initiative to distribute hearing aids to youths, farmers, and individuals with hearing disabilities through the WOFAN-ICON2 Project.

The distribution began in Abuja with the first batch of 50 hearing aids, part of a total of 1,100 devices planned for beneficiaries in various project states.

Dr. Salamatu Garba, the Project Director for WOFAN-ICON2, emphasized that the project is aimed at restoring opportunities and hope to individuals who have faced hearing loss from an early age or due to adulthood conditions. Many of these individuals have struggled with the impact of hearing impairment on their personal and professional lives.

She remarked, “The most rewarding part is seeing people who once felt disconnected re-engage in conversations, now able to hear clearly.”

Despite medical assessments being available, many had been unable to afford hearing aids, which has limited their access to treatment and support.

Mr. Taiwo Olawale, WOFAN’s Business Development Manager, added that the distribution process includes same-day screenings, fitting, and training by qualified Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialists. This approach ensures that recipients know how to use and care for their new devices.

The initiative places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, aiming to support women from all walks of life, including those living with disabilities like visual impairment and albinism.

ENT Specialist Dr. Munir Anka from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital explained that the beneficiaries are first given thorough medical screenings and audiological tests before receiving rechargeable hearing aids, which are particularly beneficial for those who are unemployed.

The MasterCard Foundation has set a goal to reach 30 million young people across Africa, with a significant portion of that number coming from Nigeria.

Of these, one million young people with disabilities are expected to benefit from the Foundation’s various empowerment programs.

Professor Sani Miko, Chairman of the WOFAN Technical Board, described the program as a timely intervention that will bridge communication gaps, improve the quality of life for beneficiaries, and help restore their dignity.

“The distribution of hearing aids is a vital resource that many people could not access due to financial constraints,” Professor Miko said.

“We are grateful to the MasterCard Foundation and WOFAN for making this initiative possible, as it has the potential to significantly change the lives of recipients and improve their participation in society.”

One of the recipients, Precious Usman, shared her appreciation for receiving the hearing aid, expressing that it would help her return to her farming work and support her family.

“I am now able to hear with the hearing aid. I am grateful for this support for people with disabilities,” she said.
