by AgroNigeria

The Yobe State Government has announced a contribution of ₦80 million counterpart funding for the World Bank-supported Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), covering the period from 2023 to 2026.

This was revealed by the state’s L-PRES coordinator, Adama Madaki, during a press briefing in Damaturu on Monday.

She explained that the six-year initiative, jointly funded by the World Bank, the state government, and beneficiary communities, is being implemented across 20 states in Nigeria.

Madaki highlighted that the project focuses on promoting livestock value chains such as cattle, sheep, goats, dairy, beef, poultry, piggery, and honey.

He stated that Yobe has chosen to prioritise cattle, sheep, and goats due to its comparative advantage in those areas.

According to her, project implementation began in December 2022, aiming to boost livestock productivity, enhance commercialisation, and strengthen the resilience of livestock production systems.

Key achievements under the project in Yobe include:

– Procurement of 700 crop residue crushers and 20 solar-powered refrigerators for livestock farmers and butchers.

– Installation of 71 solar-powered boreholes across grazing reserves, stock routes, and pastoralist communities.

– Establishment of five pasture demonstration sites in Lawankalam, Geidam, Jakusko, Kanda, and Danchuwa.

– Rehabilitation and equipping of veterinary clinics in Potiskum, Nguru, and Damaturu.

– Creation of artificial insemination centres in Nguru and Jakusko.

Installation of cold chain vaccine storage facilities at the Damaturu veterinary clinic.

– Construction of a modern livestock market in Geidam and slaughter slabs in various communities.

Madaki also noted that over 600 individuals, including veterinary doctors, livestock farmers, and environmentalists have been trained in areas such as animal husbandry, waste management, and conflict resolution.

She praised Governor Mai Mala Buni for his strong support, which she said has been crucial to the project’s success in the state.
