Yobe Targets Tree Planting to Combat Climate Change

by AgroNigeria

As part of its efforts to tackle desertification and restore the natural environment, the Yobe State Government has set up a committee to address environmental hazards and promote tree planting.

Governor Mai Mala Buni announced the formation of the committee on Friday in Damaturu, highlighting that it is part of a large-scale tree-planting initiative planned across the state.

As part of the initiative, each local government area will receive at least 3,000 tree seedlings, with additional seedlings made available for planting at the household level. The first phase of the campaign aims to distribute and plant two million seedlings.

The committee, led by Deputy Governor Idi Barde Gubana, is expected to commence its activities within one week to take full advantage of the current planting season in August.

Governor Buni revealed that sub-committees would be formed to handle key aspects of the project, including site selection, land preparation, ploughing, seedling treatment, and the distribution of approximately 50,000 seedlings already secured for the campaign.

He announced that the tree-planting exercise will officially begin in Damaturu on August 27, 2025, before being expanded to all 17 local government areas on August 29, 2025.

The governor emphasized that the initiative reflects his administration’s strong dedication to addressing environmental issues and advancing sustainable development throughout the state.
