Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo North) has facilitated the training of over 100 farmers from his senatorial district in modern agricultural practices.
The programme, organised in partnership with the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) and consultancy firm Sam Sedi Nigeria Limited, included training sessions and distribution of improved farm inputs to beneficiaries.
Speaking at the closing ceremony on Friday, NIFOR’s Executive Director, Dr. Isona Gold—represented by Dr. Esohe Ilori, Head of Planning—emphasised that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural output in the region.
She stated that NIFOR remains dedicated to producing high-yield, disease-resistant varieties of oil palm, coconut, date palm, shea, and raphia palm.
“Our presence here today is to ensure that the farmers receive top-quality seedlings capable of significantly increasing productivity and improving their standard of living,” Ilori said.
She highlighted the importance of equipping farmers with essential tools and knowledge to achieve food security, generate employment, and promote long-term economic growth. Ilori also pledged NIFOR’s ongoing technical support and innovation to sustain farmers’ progress.
“Through initiatives like this, we’re not only cultivating crops but also nurturing prosperity and a brighter future for our rural communities,” she added.
Mr. Nicholas Sam Sedi, Managing Director of Sam Sedi Nigeria Limited and the programme’s consultant, explained that the project was initiated by the Federal Government to enhance food production and empower local farmers.
According to him, the participants received training on best farming practices for cassava, maize, and oil palm cultivation, as well as proper fertiliser and chemical application.
He disclosed that each farmer would be given 30 oil palm seedlings, two bags of maize, a bag of fertiliser, 10 bundles of cassava stems, and chemicals to boost productivity.
Sedi also praised Senator Oshiomhole for his commitment to grassroots development and dedication to improving the livelihoods of rural farmers.
Represented by his Legislative Aide, Mr. Adams Mumin, Oshiomhole said the training programme was designed to uplift smallholder farmers in the district and promote sustainable farming techniques.
“We are empowering these farmers with the resources needed to increase productivity, strengthen resilience, and adopt sustainable farming practices,” he said.
He further stated, “Together, we have the potential to turn agriculture into a driving force for meaningful and long-term development. The seedlings and agro-chemicals distributed today are not just supplies—they are investments in your future. Care for them diligently, put the training into practice, and you will see positive changes on your farms.”
He emphasized that this initiative marks the beginning of a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector, noting that farmers are more than just providers—they are central to the nation’s growth and prosperity.
Several beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and Senator Oshiomhole, describing the support as timely and greatly beneficial.
