The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (O-ORBDA), Dr. Adedeji Ashiru, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to enhancing food security in the Southwest region of Nigeria.
This assurance came during the unveiling of nine newly procured tractors, an event held at the Authority’s headquarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to mark the pre-flag-off of dry season irrigation farming in its operational area.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ashiru emphasized the importance of the initiative in driving agricultural productivity and achieving food self-sufficiency.
“Today is a momentous occasion in our efforts to transform the agricultural sector and strengthen food security in Southwest Nigeria,” he stated.
“The commissioning of these nine tractors is a step forward as we prepare to commence dry season irrigation farming, equipping farmers with the necessary tools to boost their productivity.”
Dr. Ashiru noted that the initiative was in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda on food security.
“The goal is to increase crop yields, improve food availability, and stimulate economic growth in the region through enhanced irrigation systems and mechanized farming practices,” he added.
Dr. Ashiru also announced plans to further expand the Authority’s capacity to support farmers, revealing that an additional 15 tractors are expected to arrive by the end of January.
“The deployment of these tractors will allow farmers to cultivate their fields consistently, and ensure increased food production and more resilient farming communities,” he remarked.
“This initiative is designed to support farmers with the resources and infrastructure they need to thrive, while contributing to a stable and abundant food supply chain.”
The Managing Director further reiterated the Authority’s dedication to complementing the federal government’s vision for a food-secure nation.
He expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in achieving this goal.
“Our commitment to food security aligns with President Tinubu’s agenda to make agriculture a catalyst for economic growth and development.
“All hands must be on deck so that we can create a more food-secure future for Nigeria and ensure that our citizens have access to nutritious and affordable food.”
