The Jigawa State Government has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Government to revolutionize Nigeria’s agricultural sector, with a special focus on livestock development.
Governor Mallam Umar Namadi disclosed this during a working visit to the headquarters of the newly established Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja, where he was received by the Minister, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and other key officials.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the meeting provided a platform for productive discussions on critical areas of livestock development, including strategies to boost investment, demarcate cattle routes to address farmer-herder conflicts, and promote the sustainable use of fertile areas for livestock production.
Governor Namadi emphasized the importance of a strong partnership between state governments and the Federal Ministry to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s livestock industry.
He noted that livestock development plays a vital role in enhancing food security, creating employment, and driving economic growth.
“We are here to congratulate you on your appointment. This ministry is critical, especially in advancing Mr. President’s Renewed Hope agenda for food security and economic development. In Jigawa, livestock development is a key part of our 12-point agenda. We host one of Africa’s largest livestock markets, the Maigatari market, and we are working to improve it alongside our airport to support this sector,” Governor Namadi stated.
Highlighting Jigawa’s commitment to peace-building in the agricultural sector, the Governor spoke about the establishment of a Farmers and Herdsmen Board, which mediates conflicts and fosters harmonious relationships between the two groups.
“We have established a Farmers and Herdsmen Board to mediate conflicts, ensuring neither group faces exploitation. As of today, we have 54 gazetted grazing reserves and over 60 reserves with water points, which have greatly improved relations between farmers and herders,” he said.
Governor Namadi also showcased Jigawa’s successful goat-breeding program, launched in 2016 to empower widows, which has significantly boosted goat production and livelihoods. The initiative has earned national recognition and World Bank support.
In his response, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, commended Jigawa’s proactive approach, describing the state as a model for others to emulate.
“Your Excellency, Jigawa’s peace-building model is commendable. The state has one of the lowest incidences of farmer-herder conflicts because of your government’s effective strategies. This model should be replicated across the country,” the Minister stated.
As part of the partnership, both parties agreed to establish a joint task force to identify priority areas and develop actionable policies for immediate implementation.
