Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, the wife of the Oyo State governor, has emphasized the need for increased youth involvement in agriculture to boost food production, generate employment, and support sustainable livelihoods for millions of Nigerians.
Speaking in Ibadan at the Youth Agricultural Support Program—an empowerment initiative organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in partnership with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Mrs. Makinde expressed concern over the declining interest of young people in agriculture.
She attributed this trend to widespread misconceptions about the sector’s profitability, despite its crucial role as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.
As the Oyo State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde highlighted the vital link between youth participation in agriculture, rural development, and security, noting that many young people have yet to take advantage of opportunities in the sector.
The empowerment program included lectures on chili pepper and yam cultivation, along with the distribution of farm equipment and cash grants to support beneficiaries.
Speaking through the Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde reaffirmed that the RHI Youth Agricultural Support Program demonstrates the federal government’s dedication to empowering young Nigerians and securing their future through agriculture.
She stated, “While this initiative originates from the Federal Government, it aligns seamlessly with the Oyo State government’s vision of advancing agricultural development, creating jobs, and enhancing economic empowerment.
“It will inspire young farmers, provide solutions to key challenges, and support agricultural grants. I sincerely appreciate Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for spearheading this initiative.
“This impactful effort will open up opportunities while addressing critical issues related to youth employment and food security.”
She encouraged the beneficiaries to recognize that agriculture has evolved beyond a traditional practice and now integrates technology-driven solutions such as precision farming, AgriTech, innovation, and value chain development—key platforms for wealth creation.
“With the right mindset and education, you have the potential to become the next generation of agricultural leaders, starting today. Let us cultivate hope, plant the seeds of progress, and work together to achieve a future of prosperity.”
Several beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the efforts of both the state and federal governments, pledging to make the most of the empowerment opportunities provided.
