The Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Government to advance soil science practices aimed at improving agricultural productivity and reducing crop losses across the country.
President of the Society, Professor Jibril Mohammad, made this known on Monday during a press briefing in Kano ahead of the Society’s 49th Annual General Conference.
He emphasized the importance of science-led strategies in improving soil health and ensuring long-term food security.
Professor Mohammad, who also serves as Director of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, said the collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security would focus on research, data dissemination, and the promotion of best practices in soil use and fertiliser application.
“This collaboration is geared towards improving agricultural productivity and sustainability,” he said.
Themed “Promoting Soil Health and Resilience Through Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development,” the upcoming conference will explore modern agricultural techniques and innovative scientific solutions to enhance soil resilience and support sustainable food systems.
According to Professor Mohammad, the event will provide a platform to chart practical pathways for sustainable agricultural growth, with an emphasis on soil management as a key driver of productivity.
The conference, scheduled to hold from April 8 to 11 at Bayero University, Kano, will feature technical sessions on land resource assessment, soil health and nutrient management, soil physics and conservation, capacity building, extension services, and emerging trends in soil science research.
