The National Coordinator of the Global Initiative for Youth Advancement for Peace Nigeria, Raymond James, on Monday called on both commercial and household farmers to adopt and consume Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as a solution to the rising food scarcity in the country.
Speaking in Owerri, Imo State, Mr. James—who also serves as the Executive Secretary of the Young Farmers Association in Imo State—stated that the campaign aims to correct widespread misinformation about GMOs.
According to him, “These biotechnological innovations are the result of years of rigorous research and are both safe and beneficial to human health.
“GMOs are scientifically backed and have been shown to improve crop yield and combat certain diseases.
“We must move past the fear and embrace these tools as a means of achieving food security. We call on citizens to embrace Genetically Modified Organisms and dismiss common misconceptions surrounding the technology.”
He further highlighted the advantages of GMOs, stating: “Genetically Modified Organisms can offer benefits like increased crop yields, reduced pesticide use, and enhanced nutritional content.”
Supporting this view, biotechnologist Mr. Uzoho John urged Nigerian farmers to explore GMOs as a more sustainable alternative to conventional farming, especially given the declining effectiveness of chemical inputs such as fertilizers and herbicides.
“Biotechnology presents a smarter, more sustainable approach to agriculture. It’s essential that we align with science-driven practices to ensure food sufficiency nationwide,” Mr. Uzoho said.
Esther Udoamaka John, the South East President of the OFAB Youth Vanguard, echoed the call, stressing the role of young people in modernizing agriculture.
“Young people must be proactive in adopting modern agricultural solutions if the issue of food security must be taken seriously.
“To enable the state to embrace food security, all hands must be on deck to ensure food sufficiency. GMOs improve agriculture and offer nutritional value. Let us spread the fact about GMOs and not the fear. We call on everyone to adopt, consume and create wider awareness about GMOs,” she said.
