Livestock Ministry Celebrates One Year Anniversary

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development today marks its first anniversary, celebrating a year since its establishment.

The Ministry was created to drive policy reforms, build partnerships, and implement grassroots interventions aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s multi-billion-naira livestock sector.

Established by President Bola Tinubu to tackle decades-old challenges in animal production, grazing management, and value addition, the Ministry says it has laid the groundwork for transforming livestock into a key driver of national food security and rural prosperity.

Over the past year, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to accelerating progress across all critical areas of the livestock ecosystem.

“We are charting a new course, guided by the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL‑GAS), which focuses on critical pillars such as feed and fodder development, livestock value chain transformation, breed improvement, animal health, youth and women empowerment, and access to finance,” the Minister said.

In the last twelve months, the Ministry has worked with states, communities, and development partners to roll out mass vaccination campaigns against transboundary animal diseases, rehabilitate grazing reserves, and train pastoralists in modern husbandry practices.

Industry stakeholders say these early steps are already boosting productivity and easing long-standing farmer-herder tensions, with livestock farmers benefitting from extension services and input support.

Looking ahead, the Ministry noted that its priorities for its second year include strengthening private investment in ranching and feedlots, promoting climate-resilient fodder production, and expanding the export potential for Nigerian meat and dairy products.

Stakeholders, including the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association and pastoralist groups, have applauded the Ministry’s proactive approach and pledged continued collaboration.
