The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Moses Essien, has underscored the importance of building a strong and adaptable agribusiness system capable of driving Nigeria’s economic recovery and sustainability.

Speaking at the 4th Agribusiness Roundtable International Conference held in Uyo, Essien stated that a resilient agribusiness sector can withstand global economic shocks while generating employment, promoting trade, and expanding the nation’s revenue streams.

The event, organised by the Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro-Industry Development Initiative (NAADI), brought together policymakers, investors, and stakeholders from across the agricultural value chain. It focused on the theme “Resilient Agribusiness: A Sustainable Solution for a Changing World.”

Essien explained that the agricultural sector holds vast potential for economic diversification and inclusive growth if adequately supported through mechanisation, agro-processing, value addition, and improved access to finance.

He noted that agribusiness could also stimulate progress in related industries such as manufacturing, logistics, finance, and technology.

Commending Governor Umo Eno’s agricultural drive under the ARISE Agenda, the lawmaker praised the administration’s initiatives in large-scale farming, rural enterprise development, and youth-oriented agricultural programmes. He said these efforts were transforming agriculture in Akwa Ibom from a subsistence practice into a competitive economic venture.

Representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Essien highlighted the area’s potential as a major agricultural zone with fertile land suitable for crops like cassava, maize, and oil palm.

He called for a shift from smallholder farming to more commercial and technology-driven agricultural practices to maximise productivity and profitability.

The lawmaker assured that the House of Assembly remains dedicated to supporting agricultural growth through policy reforms, infrastructural development in rural communities, financial frameworks, and private sector engagement.

Essien encouraged participants at the conference to turn their discussions into concrete partnerships and initiatives that would strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global agribusiness landscape.

He also applauded NAADI for its continued efforts in advancing agribusiness and expressed confidence that the conference resolutions would foster job creation, food security, and a more diversified national economy.
