The Sokoto state government, in collaboration with the federal government and the World Bank, is committed to tackling desertification and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
The administration has pledged 1 billion naira in counterpart funding for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, coordinated by the federal government with World Bank support.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu highlighted the project’s significance during a visit by World Bank officials led by Lia Sieghart. He commended the federal government’s initiative in spearheading ACReSAL, emphasizing its potential to combat desertification and rehabilitate degraded land crucial for agriculture.
He stressed the state’s role as a key partner in the project, emphasizing the need for multi-sectoral coordination to enhance climate resilience and manage natural resources effectively.
“As a key partner in the project, our role is critical to promoting multi-sectoral coordination and cooperation for building climate resilience and improved management of land and natural resources,” he said.
Sieghart expressed satisfaction with the state government’s commitment to the program. The ACReSAL project aims to restore one million hectares of degraded land in northern Nigeria, aligning with the federal government’s broader goal of restoring four million hectares by 2030.
Governor Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to supporting ACReSAL, emphasizing the importance of addressing environmental degradation and enhancing economic empowerment in Sokoto state.
