Abia Vows to Create Enabling Environment for Farmers to Thrive

by AgroNigeria

The government of Abia State has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a conducive environment for farmers, with a goal to increase food production, create employment, and generate revenue from agricultural products across all localities.

Speaking at the launch of the Abia North senatorial zone farming season in Bende Local Government Area, Governor Alex Otti reiterated his determination to modernize agriculture in the state, shifting from local to mechanized farming practices.

Governor Otti, who was represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Monica Ironkwe praised the theme of the 2024 farming season, “Boosting Food Production; Let’s Get Back to the Farm,” as timely given the current challenges of food scarcity and hunger.

Speaking on the importance of diversifying the state’s economy, Governor Otti urged participants to embrace agriculture as a key economic pillar and to reduce dependence on imported foods.

He stressed that the state has huge agricultural potential, including its fertile land, abundant water resources, and diverse crops such as oil palm, rubber, rice, cocoa, cassava, fisheries, and livestock.

Expressing gratitude to farmers for their support, Governor Otti assured them of his administration’s commitment to creating a sustainable agricultural economy in Abia.

The Mayor of Bende Local Government Area, Hon. Chijioke Nwankwo commended Dr. Otti for his commitment towards agriculture. He revealed that shortly after assuming office, Dr. Otti, alongside some top government officials, initiated soil sampling and testing in the local government. According to him, this would “usher in and boost mechanized farming in the area.”

Hon. Nwankwo further announced plans to conduct farmer training sessions in the local government council starting April 12. He noted that this would contribute to agricultural productivity in the region.

His words: “Abia North senatorial zone farming season flag-off is a significant event. We all know that for a long time now, it has not been like this. Governor Otti is running a responsible government, and he is responsive to the yearnings of his people.

“We are also working with the governor and replicating what he is doing in Bende Local Government. Recently, we distributed over 150 rice seedlings to selected rice farmers to enable them to go into their farms in this farming season.”
