Lagos Island Lawmaker Organises Subsidised Food Market for Constituents

by AgroNigeria

The lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency 1 at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Omolara Oyekan Olumegbon has organized a subsidized food market for constituents, so that residents can afford staple food items at discounted prices.

AgroNigeria gathered that the food market was organized in conjunction with the Queen Mother Organisation, held on Sunday, March 31 at Oluwole Market, Lagos Island, in honour of Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The discounted food items – rice, garri, bread, eggs, spaghetti, palm oil, yam, indomie, chicken, beans among others – were sold at 50-70% discount to residents.

Princess Omolara, the Chairman of House committee on Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation and Job Creation, explained that the initiative was aimed at helping residents afford staple food items at discounted prices.

At the food market venue, residents were given vouchers as a way of coordinating the selling of the items.

The Nigeria Police and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were also on ground to maintain law and order.

While addressing the public on the initiative, Princess Omolara said: “During my primaries, one of my many campaign promises was a food bank and tech hub for residents. I had the initiative of having food banks for people to buy things at subsidized prices as of 2022. I reached out to a few people and I told them it was time to do it, and we got a lot of items for sale. This is just a way of reaching out to the community in general.

“The turnout is massive, and I’m impressed. We had different items to sell at discounted prices. For example, we sold indomie for N2,000 instead of N9,500. I got overwhelmed and emotional seeing the turnout. I’m grateful to all sponsors.

“I want to implore my constituents to keep calm at this critical phase of the country, all hands are on deck. The President, Bola Tinubu, and his wife, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu are doing well to push the country to greater heights. We will also have a proper tech hub in the community for coding and to help improve the tech skills of young ones.”

In his own remarks, Chief Imam, Lukman Popoola in his prayer during the opening session of the market, prayed for the progress of Hon. Omolara and the Lagos Island constituency at large.

He then described the food market as a good opportunity for residents to buy various items at a subsidized price.
