In response to the recent outbreak of pests such as Quela birds, locusts, and grasshoppers in farmlands across Bauchi State, the government has approved the sum of N45 million for the procurement of agrochemicals and other equipment.
Governor Bala Mohammed made this announcement during the flagging-off of aerial spray operations against Quelea birds at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport in Bauchi.
Gov. Mohammed emphasized the emergency need for timely and effective control of the pest outbreak, highlighting agriculture as the backbone of Bauchi’s economy.
He noted that over 75% of the state’s population is employed in the agricultural sector and praised the positive impact of federal agricultural transformation policies on increased yield and production, particularly in grains.
The Quelea bird, described as one of the most dangerous agricultural pests, poses a significant threat to food security not only in Nigeria but across Africa.
Governor Mohammed stressed that a flock of 2 million Quelea birds can destroy 20 tonnes of grains in just one day, leading to substantial grain deficiencies annually.
Due to the migratory nature of these birds, aerial spray of chemicals and ground control by the State Ministry of Agriculture’s fumigation team are the primary methods of pest control.
The commissioner assured communities about the safety of the upcoming aerial spray but cautioned against consuming any dead birds resulting from the operation, as they may pose a poisoning risk.
