As part of efforts to boost food production and enhance agricultural activities, the Akwa Ibom State Government plans to construct 486 rural roads in 2025.
Speaking during a press briefing in Uyo, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Offiong Offor, noted that the initiative aims to facilitate transportation of farm produce and reduce post-harvest losses.
Dr. Offor revealed that the project would be implemented through collaboration between the state Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project, the World Bank, and the French Development Agency. These roads will be strategically built in agriculturally developed areas across the state, facilitating the transportation of farm produce to urban centers and thereby reducing post-harvest losses.
Speaking further, Dr. Offor emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting farmers by distributing farm inputs. Governor Umo Eno’s administration aims to bolster cooperative societies to promote more productive farming practices, as collective efforts often lead to innovative ideas and easier access to production funds.
To engage the younger generation in agriculture, the state has revived the Young Farmers Club in public schools, encouraging students to participate in farming activities and fostering their interest in the sector.
Dr. Offor urged the people of Akwa Ibom to embrace farming and rally behind the government’s agricultural investments, emphasizing that such initiatives are crucial for improving the overall quality of life in the state.
