President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Nathaniel Atebije, has emphasized the need for the government to enhance rural infrastructure to increase food production and reduce post-harvest losses.
“The government should improve rural infrastructure, such as roads, storage facilities, and irrigation systems, to enhance food production and reduce post-harvest losses,” Atebije stressed during the institute’s seventh press conference.
He highlighted the importance of better roads for efficient transportation of produce to markets and advocated for financial support, access to credit, and training for smallholder farmers, who produce the majority of Nigeria’s food.
Atebije also emphasized the need to strengthen agricultural value chains by ensuring farmers have access to markets, fair prices, and transparent trade practices.
By addressing these challenges, the government can significantly boost food production and security in Nigeria.
