Senator Bima Enagi, a member of the 9th National Assembly from Niger State, has revealed that the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development has the potential to generate over N150 billion annually through livestock exports.
Speaking to journalists in Minna, Niger State, Senator Bima pointed out that Nigeria, with 40% of West Africa’s total cattle population and over 150 million livestock, could significantly boost its foreign exchange earnings by exporting livestock products. According to him, “Livestock exports could be the game changer the nation needs to diversify away from oil.”
The senator criticized Nigeria’s failure to tap into the livestock export market, attributing the missed opportunity to inadequate policies, laws, and investment in the sector. However, he expressed optimism that the newly established Ministry of Livestock would address these challenges.
Highlighting the sector’s potential for both revenue generation and protein supply, Bima recalled his efforts in introducing the “National Livestock Identification and Management Bureau Bill” in the 9th Assembly. Although the bill passed its first and second readings, further progress was stalled due to “misplaced concerns” raised by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and its agencies at the time.
Bima emphasized, “If knowledgeable, experienced, and practical individuals are appointed to lead the ministry, it could create more jobs, improve the welfare of livestock farmers, prevent cattle rustling and conflicts between farmers and herders, and address food safety and animal health concerns.”
He also noted that the ministry would open up international market access, create a comprehensive database of animals from birth to consumption, and play a vital role in diversifying the economy.
Senator Bima further advocated for the establishment of cattle grazing routes in Nigeria, emphasizing that this move could position the country as a leader in Africa’s agricultural sector.
The senator commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking bold steps towards reviving the national economy and called on Nigerians to support the administration in maintaining democracy.
