The Federal Government has commenced the sale of 50kg bags of rice at a subsidised rate of N40,000 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of efforts to alleviate the burden of rising food prices on Nigerians.
The initiative, launched on Thursday, is aimed at providing relief to citizens amid ongoing economic challenges.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who was represented by Mrs. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, the ministry’s State Director, described the programme as one of several initiatives designed to bring relief to Nigerians.
He emphasized that the distribution process is being monitored by various Federal Government agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and security.
To purchase the subsidised rice, individuals are required to present their National Identification Number (NIN) and an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card. The 50kg bags are being sold at N40,000, a reduced rate aimed at easing access for many Nigerians.
Kyari praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his commitment to the welfare of the state’s citizens. He highlighted Ogun as one of the first states to benefit from the programme, attributing this to the governor’s dedication and visionary leadership.
“Ogun State has implemented one of the most organised distribution systems, ensuring that the rice reaches all three senatorial districts and grassroots areas,” Kyari noted.
The subsidised rice programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to address food insecurity and support Nigerians during difficult times.
