Ekiti State pig farmers have been urged to be on high alert following threats of African swine fever (ASF) disease.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, issued a strong warning about the highly contagious viral disease, which could be extremely detrimental to the state’s pig industry.
African Swine Fever is a deadly viral disease that can cause high mortality rates in pigs. It can spread rapidly through direct contact with infected pigs, contaminated feed, or through people, vehicles, and other animals.
Boluwade emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent the outbreak and its consequences.
He advised farmers to implement biosecurity measures, including strict hygiene practices, limiting farm visits, and increasing nutritional intake to boost pig immunity.
Timely slaughter of mature pigs and controlled access to farms were also recommended.
The commissioner further stressed the importance of public awareness and education for farm workers and visitors.
He urged farmers to establish secure perimeters around their farms and avoid reusing feed bags to minimize the risk of contamination.
