FG Pledges to Eradicate Child Labor in Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector

by AgroNigeria

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling child labor in the agricultural sector, recognizing the unique cultural context in Africa that sometimes diverges from Western perspectives.

The Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, revealed this through his X page where he said: “We believe in approaching this issue with respect for our traditions while upholding global standards for child welfare and labor practices.”

He stated that these efforts align with President Bola Tinubu GCFR’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes agriculture and food security.

He also explained that the Ministry aims to build a sustainable agricultural sector providing decent work opportunities, supporting parents’ livelihoods to prevent child labor.

“Our Ministry stands resolute in our commitment to protect the welfare of our youth,” Senator Kyari noted.

He then added that the government is exploring educational programs and potential adjustments to the academic calendar to ensure children’s safe involvement in agricultural activities during holidays.
