The European Union and the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo in Imo State, have reaffirmed their dedication to promoting digitalization in agriculture across Nigeria and other Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries.

Mr. Massimo De Luca, Head of Co-operation for the EU delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, expressed gratitude to the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences for its effective collaboration in training farmers from across the state.

He also thanked the Imo State government, led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, for its support, emphasizing that the EU’s DIGISOL project would “transform lives through food security.”

“The EU DIGISOL project is about digital solutions and transformation of lives through food sustainability and ensuring that Nigerian farmers have the tools that they need to thrive in an era of climate change,” Luca stated.

The project aims to enhance digital production, processing, and trade knowledge sharing, with 100 farmers in Imo, 200 in Kwara, and 300 in Ogun states already benefiting.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Christopher Eze highlighted the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action, and food security through technical education and agriculture.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Nelson Alino, thanked the EU for supporting the institution’s agro-revolution initiatives and expressed readiness for stronger collaborations.

Commissioner Dr. Chimezie Amadi assured the EU of the state’s commitment to uniting agriculture and digitalization, leveraging technology to enhance market access and connect customers.

Mrs. Ngozi Nwadike, National Coordinator of the Fexdora Cooperative Agro Development, noted that the project has empowered farmers to digitally monitor their farms, sell products, and organically combat diseases like cassava mosaic.
