FCT Unveils Solar-powered Farmers’ Market in Utako

by AgroNigeria

In a bid to enhance economic growth and agricultural development, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has unveiled a solar-powered farmers’ market in Utako, Abuja.

The market, spanning about 3,000 square meters of land, was officially inaugurated by Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for the FCT over the weekend.

The minister disclosed that the market is a project developed by Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL). It boasts an array of modern facilities, including 50 lockup shops, 40 informal stalls, and seven spacious warehouses.

The project is designed to serve as a platform for local farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Mahmoud emphasized the market’s role as an excellent point for economic empowerment.

She noted that the market would serve as a bridge between farmers and consumers by offering direct trade opportunities without middlemen, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase the income of rural farmers.

Dr. Mahmoud lauded the collaboration between the public and private sectors, noting that the market is a prime example of how strategic investment and community-focused development can create tangible benefits for the people.

The Minister also urged all farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs to fully embrace the facility and utilize it as a springboard for economic expansion.

She stated that the government is committed to ensuring a resilient economy that supports local agriculture and ensures access to quality produce for residents throughout the FCT.

In her address, Amb. Maureen Tamuno, the Group Managing Director/CEO of AICL, revealed that the Utako farmers’ market is not just a first for Abuja, but for Nigeria as a whole, being the nation’s inaugural green, solar-powered market.

Tamuno noted that the market aligns with the FCT Administration’s vision of transforming Abuja into a world-class city, supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11. SDG 11 aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

“The establishment of this market stands as a testament to AICL’s commitment to integrating sustainability into urban development,” Tamuno stated.

“With its solar-powered systems, the market ensures a reliable and clean energy source that not only powers the market’s operations but also extends trading hours and preserves perishable goods, contributing to greater profitability for traders.”
