The Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) has projected that the Federal Government National Food Security Policy on the agriculture, and aquaculture value chain will contribute over 13 per cent significant growth to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the next five years.

The institute estimates that this initiative will contribute over 13% growth to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the next five years.

Dr. Sule Abiodun, Director of Training at NIOMR, revealed this during a workshop held in Delta State aimed at empowering 70 farmers in the fish production value chain.

Represented by Dr. Olaji Ebenezer, Abiodun noted that agriculture and aquaculture currently account for over 24% of the country’s GDP.

He emphasized that the Federal Government’s renewed efforts toward economic diversification and enhanced food security will further boost these sectors, leading to improved nutrition and the development of the marine economy.

The training, which concluded on September 27 in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State, brought together participants from Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East, and Ukwuani.

According to Dr. Ebenezer, the program aimed to equip farmers with comprehensive skills in fish breeding, production value chain, and the economics of fish farming. Participants were trained by seasoned professionals in the sector, learning not only how to become self-reliant but also how to create job opportunities for others.

High Chief Ogbuefi Eric Anigala, Project Facilitator and representative of the Delta State Government, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NIOMR’s Executive Director, Dr. Sule Abiodun, for their commitment to innovation and research in aquaculture.

He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in improving the livelihoods of Nigerians and combating poverty, hunger, and food insecurity.

Kwale’s community youth leader, Hon. Azubuike Ejechi, expressed gratitude on behalf of the participants.

He stressed the importance of fish production value chain training in enhancing household incomes and improving the economic well-being of youths and women in the community.

Two of the participants, Ms. Sylverline Okwuelum and Amede Edith, shared their experiences, expressing that the training had come at the perfect time. They affirmed that the knowledge gained would enhance their capabilities in fish farming and expand their businesses.

The program, sponsored by the Federal Government of Nigeria and implemented by NIOMR in collaboration with Project Consultant Messrs Gakfaws, concluded with the presentation of certificates to the participants.
