The Federal Government has pledged firm support for the Agricultural Farmers and Traders Development Association of Nigeria (AFTDAN) in a strategic collaboration aimed at strengthening the agricultural value chain, expanding market access, and advancing sustainable farming practices.
Speaking during the inauguration of AFTDAN’s Board of Trustees and members on Wednesday in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described the association’s formation as a timely and commendable step toward national food security and economic growth.
Akume, represented by Alhaji Wada Nas, underscored the crucial role of farmers and traders in driving economic stability and job creation.
Also addressing the gathering, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, represented by Dr. Akanbi Olubunmi, hailed AFTDAN as a vital force in revitalizing Nigeria’s agriculture, describing the sector as key to the nation’s prosperity.
In his remarks, AFTDAN National President Mr. Elijah Nze emphasized that the association was established as a non-governmental organization to champion agricultural development and uplift the livelihoods of farmers and traders.
He cited persistent challenges plaguing the sector ranging from limited irrigation and mechanization to market constraints and inadequate extension services and assured that AFTDAN is ready to tackle these issues through coordinated efforts and resource mobilization.
The Ona of Abaji, His Royal Majesty Dr. Adamu Yunusa, represented by Alhaji Umar Faruk, also lent his voice to the call for rural agricultural development, describing agriculture as the most dependable avenue for national progress.
AFTDAN reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside government and stakeholders to eliminate hunger, defend farmers’ rights, and promote economic empowerment through inclusive and sustainable initiatives.
