The Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has set an ambitious goal to cultivate over 10 million hectares of land for food production, ensuring food security in Nigeria.
Speaking at a book launch at Customs Headquarters in Abuja, Adeniyi stated, “There’s an ambitious target to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land for food production. This initiative not only aims to boost our food security but also to leverage our abundant arable land, only 40 per cent of which is currently cultivated.”
Adeniyi emphasized Customs’ support for the government’s food security plan, highlighting the removal of tariffs and import duties on key staples like rice, wheat, maize, and sorghum for six months to address high food prices.
By targeting 10 million hectares for food production, the government aims to boost food security, leverage abundant arable land (currently only 40% cultivated), address high food prices through tariff removals, and import duty waivers.
This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring food security and promoting agricultural development in Nigeria.
