The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector by leveraging strategic partnerships and innovative programmes aimed at boosting production, ensuring food security, and driving economic growth.
Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, made this pledge during a meeting with delegations from the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) and Dabareji Farms on Monday in Abuja.
Maiha stressed the government’s resolve to advance the livestock value chain and unlock its vast economic potential.
According to Maiha, the ministry’s vision is centered on improving the livestock value chain by fostering collaboration with private sector players and financial institutions.
He noted that partnerships with key stakeholders like NIRSAL would provide sustainable solutions for animal husbandry, disease control, and improved market access.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Chinyere Akujobi, underscored the need for a robust disease control programme, especially for livestock exports.
She pointed out that trade partners require assurance that exported animals are sourced from disease-free zones, calling for proactive measures and efficient monitoring systems to address this challenge.
Earlier, Saad Hamidu, head of NIRSAL’s delegation, highlighted the significance of addressing gaps in the livestock value chain.
He commended the recent establishment of a 1,500-capacity meat processing factory in the Federal Capital Territory, describing it as a major step towards creating a sustainable livestock supply chain.
Hamidu added that NIRSAL is collaborating with the ministry to streamline supply systems and secure financing to support the entire ecosystem.
Dr. Celestine Ayok, a consultant with Dabareji Farms, suggested that rehabilitating dams and reviving grazing reserves would be immediate gains for the ministry.
He emphasized that de-silting and restoring selected dams would enhance water availability, improve productivity, and strengthen grazing systems.
Both parties expressed optimism that these collaborative efforts would significantly enhance livestock production, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the country’s overall economic development.
