Dr. Kanayo Felix Nwanze, former President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has passed away.

His death marks the loss of a visionary leader who dedicated his life to transforming global agriculture and advocating for smallholder farmers and rural communities.

During his tenure at IFAD, Dr. Nwanze championed initiatives that strengthened food security, reduced poverty, and promoted sustainable agricultural practices.

He was instrumental in ensuring that agriculture remained central to the global development agenda.

Before leading IFAD, he served as Director-General of the Africa Rice Center, where he spearheaded the introduction and promotion of New Rice for Africa (NERICA), a high-yield, drought- and pest-resistant rice variety designed to enhance food production across the continent.

He was also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Food Security.

IFAD and the international development community have expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as a compassionate leader and a tireless advocate for rural development.

Tributes continue to pour in, recognizing his immense contributions to global agriculture and food security.

Dr. Nwanze’s legacy will live on through the millions of lives he touched and the policies he helped shape. Nigeria and the world mourn the loss of an extraordinary leader.
