The Yoruba Leaders of Thought has called on the federal and state governments to increase investments in agriculture to achieve food sufficiency in Nigeria.
The group’s national secretary, Bayo Aina, made the call during an interaction with journalists in Ado Ekiti, saying:
“The government is already coming out with unprecedented steps… A lot of states are already investing in agriculture.”
Aina emphasized the need for governments to support food production, noting that middlemen benefiting from high prices would not want prices to decrease.
He said: “Those benefitting from the high prices of food will not want the prices to go down, but the government and those of us who buy food desire cheaper food and great accessibility to food.”
Aina commended the Tinubu administration for granting fiscal autonomy to local governments, describing it as “a step in a very good direction” that would enable local governments to address local needs.
He encouraged governments to continue supporting food production to ensure food sufficiency.
