In anticipation of World Environment Day (WED) on June 5, the One Million Tree Initiative has joined forces with CE Power Solutions, GSR 360, and SMP Media Group to organize a tree-planting event in Lagos.
This annual global celebration raises awareness about the pressing threats facing our planet’s ecosystems.
The theme for this year’s WED, “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience,” emphasizes the importance of protecting and reviving ecosystems. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. According to experts, planting trees is a crucial step in combating desertification and erosion.
Trees offer numerous benefits, including purifying the air, producing food, creating habitats, acting as windbreaks, and regulating temperatures.
By planting trees, we can contribute to mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable environment. To achieve this, the partners will collaborate on a tree-planting drive at Omole Housing Estate, Phase 1, Ikeja.
Josfyn Uba, co-founder of the One Million Tree Initiative, emphasized that this effort aims to spark meaningful discussions about environmental and climate science while taking concrete action. By working together, we can make a positive impact on our planet’s future.
“We have carried out projects with Rotary Club of Lekki Phase 1. Last year, we planted 100 coconut trees under Rotary International.”
Lady Cheta Nwabuike, executive director at CE Power Solutions, and sponsor, said the organisation recognised the need to address challenges posed by climate change, land degradation, and frequency of droughts.
“It is crucial to recognise the need for action against climate change and the role of tree planting in addressing this.
