The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has unveiled plans to establish a regional agricultural centre in Bayelsa State, marking a significant step in expanding its developmental impact beyond its main facility in Ibadan, Oyo State.
This development came to light during a courtesy visit by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, to the IITA headquarters in Ibadan.
The visit, which coincided with a political engagement in the state, provided an opportunity for the governor to explore collaborations aimed at enhancing agricultural practices and youth empowerment in Bayelsa.
Governor Diri, accompanied by the Commissioner for Youth Development, expressed enthusiasm about the proposed initiative, noting that Bayelsa is ready for a productive alliance with the international research body.

“Although this visit was impromptu, it is a crucial step in our discussions with IITA,” Diri said. “Our state has fertile lowlands suitable for various types of agriculture, and we are keen to tap into your expertise and technology to not only boost production but also fully develop the agricultural value chain.”
He emphasized that Bayelsa, despite its primarily maritime geography, has vast untapped agricultural potential.
According to him, the state’s current focus on primary production must evolve to include the processing and utilization of agricultural by-products—an area where IITA’s technology and research could prove transformative.
Speaking on behalf of IITA, Deputy Director-General Dr. Kenton Dashiell reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to supporting agriculture across Nigeria, especially among the youth.
He highlighted the institute’s long-standing history of research-driven innovation since its founding in 1967, aimed at combating food insecurity and mitigating the impacts of climate change on farming in tropical regions of Africa.
“Nigeria is our base, and we are proud of our work in Oyo State. Now, we are eager to establish a significant presence in Bayelsa, making it our second major hub in the country.
“We see enormous potential in Bayelsa and are ready to collaborate with the state government to empower young people through agriculture,” Dr. Dashiell stated.
Governor Diri pledged full support for the initiative, stating that relevant ministries and agencies in the state—including Youth Development, Agriculture, Marine and Blue Economy, will be mobilized to fast-track the partnership.
He noted that the initiative could be a catalyst for food security, youth employment, and economic diversification in Bayelsa.
“We view this partnership as mutually beneficial,” the governor concluded. “With IITA’s expertise and our commitment, we can unlock a new chapter in agricultural development for Bayelsa.”
